(Man, I don’t even know what the fuck t his is. Rainbow Rat meme, Emil Ottoman, 2020something)
Long day, how bout y’all?
To anyone of a select few who woke up today as paid subscribers, if you know or are tangentially AROUND me in any way. I would say “fuck, I’m sorry.” Don’t try to give people subscriptions to GIFT OTHER PEOPLE, and end up just giving a gang of people a free month to your most entirely free Substack anyway.
If you’re one of those people, sorry, that was a fuckup, please move back to wherever you were as a subscriber, and feel free to ask to behead me. I’m obviously not doing much with it.
(Aside from this weekend, which has so far been immaculate, it’s been bad since Jan7.)
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING BUT I’M DOING IT
This was my first week as a curator (literary fiction) for
’s TIF. It was super fun! Honored to be part of the thing. Such a neat thing. All these things happening.DISCOVERIES
Abstract Alex, Alex B. Another STL native, and a fantastic author. Peeped her work this week and I’ve been hooked ever since. The comments on this one have us talking about St. Louis a LOT, and her piece Ghetto Snake is amazing as well (didn’t realize it was so old.) Her stuff is usually paywalled, but it’s down, attack while you CAN, read while you CAN.
posted this dope piece and I’ve been hooked on it. he said I’d like it. He wasn’t wrong. I suggest Miguel.Sum Flux started a self-selecting Substack fiction Masterlist! If you write fiction, check it out, if it’s your vibe, follow directions and get in there.
, one of very few men I will call brother in a way not associated with the verbal tics of Randy Savage, posted the BURNER follow up to Substack High. The fact that this metacontextual experiment seems to garner great attention for three to five days and then disappear from the Substack consciousness shows a lack of imagination, so as soon as I piece my brain back together and make some money, I’ma come into this little multiverse and fuck it all the way up. and started a collab (I will admit, I did NOT see that coming.) and it’s unsurprisingly fantastic. Read this one as well.FUCK, one more.
is fucking amazing. Another connect I came to by ARC. If you don’t like this poem, we ain’t cool.Oh, oh, oh, fuck me, one more.
This hit.
YESTERDAY WAS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
But more importantly it was
’s birthday. My fiancee. My one and only. If you fuck with her and she doesn’t, I will walk you off the face of the earth and into the mist just for putting a bad word on her name. But we had fancy pastries, and decided that all birthdays are now low key low stress vibe affairs. It was lovely and today we’ve been recovering from that, AND THE TIME CHANGE, WHAT THE FUCK?!
Without her grace and patience, I’d be dead. So if you like anything I’ve written, go read her shit if you don’t, and subscribe to her. HERE
also decided to make a birthday post about her that made me cry, I have no shame, it’s beautiful. You can read that below.HERE
Then read Art School, because it’s dope. She’s also featured for the first time in print! Available in B&N and everywhere else, and internationally, and somewhere in space I’m sure, on March 15. (someone has connections, getting any real B&N distro is not easy) Her story Soma’s Reflection will be in The Midnight Vault! I’m so excited. TEN YEARS I felt like I was always going to be her only fan because people are awful. But the right people, people who could validate her in ways I couldn’t, started to take notice, and now she’s PUBBED.
Cop it at this link It also features:
who I stole this tag list from, along with all these fine writers and their publications. Liz Zimmers | Edith Bow | Sean Archer | Bryan Pirolli | Andy Futuro | CB Mason | John Ward | NJ | Hanna Delaney | William Pauley III | Jason Thompson | Nolan Green | Shaina Read | J. Curtis | Honeygloom | Stephen Duffy | K.C. Knouse | Michele Bardsley | Bob Graham | Annie Hendrix | Clancy Steadwell | Jon T | Sean Thomas McDonnell | Miguel S. | A.P Murphy | Lisa Kuznak | Bridget Riley | EJ Trask | Shane Bzdok | Adam Rockwell | Will BoucherWe also had very fancy French Pastries and Khao Soi, started watching The Gentleman. Good OST, typical Guy Ritchie shit. But man, Vinnie Jones, did you age? Looking less like Bullet Tooth Tony by the day my man.
On another note, If you don’t subscribe to
, you’re missing the juice. You’ve already missed the juice. If I had to suggest three Substacks for you to pay for, mine wouldn’t be on the list, but his would. He’s giving out gold, all the time. See.(This is just what’s going on right now, his Substack is an onion of knowledge, bite into it like an apple.)
Blake is also doing an editing and revision workshop with Chelsea Hodson. It’s $179 bucks, but two hours and two days and will absolutely be worth every penny.
People ask me why I write OK sorta sometimes. It’s because aside from putting in my time, being not exactly talented but overly precocious with the written word from a very young age, and the sheer amount of shit writing I’ve churned out in my life. I hunt down people I want to learn from to steal their juicy knowledge for my own use like prey animals and then beg or give truckstop handjobs until I have the money for something I can’t afford. (This went on a credit card. Credit is made up anyway. Fuck credit. Fuck my FICO score.)
We’re 12 days out from the move and I’m down and needing a buncha money (7-10k USD). Time to hit a lick. I’m terrified for my work life balance in the next 12 or so days, even if tomorrow I’m trying my hand at making a French Cheesecake.
Charlene Elsby sent me my ARC of The Organization Is Here To Support You even if I haven’t given a breakdown to her LAST ARC. (I’m bad at this sometimes.) And I found out we use the same bright pink bubble mailers. We are now bubble mailer buddies.
An anonymous person who is NOT
sent me a copy of INCEL, so now I can do a breakdown of it next to Amygdalatropolis. Maybe for my birthday, my entire library is in boxes.yeah, gonna really raw dog it on the whole money thing.
THE PLUG THAT MUST HAPPEN
Me and
are teaming up for an editorial slaughter. If you think you’re ready to play with the big kids. We start selling seats soon and there’s one scholarship.
I found a thread running through three stories and decided to cap them with a massive ending to the Winter storyline this year. The Winter Triptych will be in order:
FICO/ENDO/LANDLORD/CRESCENDO
(Cool ass painting from I don’t know where, the internet, memed by me, Emil Ottoman, for Cult of the Rainbow Rat, 2018? shit I don’t know.)
ALL POWER DEMANDS SACRIFICE
(Painting stolen from the internet, memed by Emil Ottoman, quote by Evelyn Milquetoast? Or someone famous. Cult of the Rainbow Rat…. Uhhh, 2023?)
And the forthcoming (and probably very long.)
My favorite sculpture is cut up and in this piece (hint, it lives at the STL art museum) a blunt to whoever can name the sculpture I cut up in the collage. Talk to me about shit!
Peace Emil, I just started digging through your Substack as I have some time to read and been meaning to check your stuff out. I clicked on the first post and saw you shouted me out. Thanks so much, very much appreciate it. Very much appreciated to be among dope writers and acknowledged as one… was in ESL and left back twice, once in kindergarten and another in the 6th grade. Long story short, it’s been a journey. Thank you for the encouragement engagement and lending my work your energy , as you seem very busy. Love! and now Miguel.
Thank you for the reminder, I forgot to add a subscribe button to Edith's page on Prisms.
I want you to know I have not kept track of the number of times I've made you cry because it's not precisely a matter of pride, but it has become a standard.
The Bar, as it were.
